Creation of an Institute for Memory Studies and Research by ULiège, ULB and the non-profit organisation MNEMA
IERM was created as a transdisciplinary structure to support, promote and federate research into the many forms of memory.
Links of memory, paths of research.
À
at the crossroads of scientific disciplines, the Institut d'Études et de Recherches sur les Mémoires (IERM) explores the many aspects of our society's relationship with the past.
Researchers examine the links between collective and individual memories.
A place for dialogue, research and transmission, the Institute makes memory a shared object, and presents itself as a laboratory where knowledge, practices and experiences converge, in interaction with society and its issues.
The Institut d'Études et de Recherches sur les Mémoires (IERM) aims to create a unique center of excellence in a rapidly expanding field of study.
Its creation was initiated by the Université de Liège and the Université Libre de Bruxelles in partnership with the non-profit organization MNEMA-Cité miroir, located in Liège and recognized by decree of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation as the multidisciplinary center for the transmission of memory.
IERM aims to develop an innovative approach based on a unifying model in which the object of study is memory itself, whether collective or individual, according to a multi-thematic strategy. It is resolutely multidisciplinary, promoting interdisciplinarity not only within the human sciences, but also between them and the sciences and techniques, as well as the health sciences.
The partnership with a recognized cultural operator such as MNEMA-Cité Miroir stimulates links between the academic and cultural worlds in the societal arena.
IERM is an area for interdisciplinary and inter-university encounters and exchanges. It aims, first and foremost, to give visibility to the work and activities of researchers and teams involved in the study of various forms of memory.
IERM aims to respond to the growing need for interdisciplinarity felt by researchers who, in their respective fields of study, are working on various aspects of memory (individual memory, collective memory, environmental memory, memories of crises, artificial memory, etc.). With this in mind, IERM provides an infrastructure for developing and supporting federative scientific initiatives, likely to advance knowledge and reflection on a complex object of study.
IERM welcomes researchers from other horizons, both nationally and internationally, and forges partnerships with other academic institutions and research centers, with the aim of creating an international research network capable of adding value to knowledge through the development of its members.
IERM establishes a dialogue with society by enhancing collaborations, and promotes best practices in terms of scientific contributions to societal players involved in remembrance projects.
